Zine Gwija

A soulful singer who joined the group, Gwija has performed internationally with the famous violinist André Rieu.

Christof van der Berg

A multi-award-winning pianist and vocalist, Van der Berg performs internationally and is known for his poetic voice.

Nhoza Sitsholwana

Described as "the sweetest voice in the country," Sitsholwana is a singer who celebrates her Xhosa culture. She is also known for her work with the Black South Easter Band.

Music style and repertoire

Fusion music: The band’s music blends traditional African songs with international classics, performing in a variety of languages including English, isiXhosa, Sesotho, and Afrikaans.

Reimagined hits: Their performances are known for putting an African spin on well-known songs like John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Tony Renis’s “Quando, Quando, Quando”.

Originals and traditionals: Their repertoire also includes original compositions and renditions of African classics such as “Nontsokolo” and “Pata Pata”.

Career highlights

International performances: Shades of Africa has performed for high-profile corporate clients like BMW and on luxury cruise lines worldwide. They have also entertained influential public figures, including a sheik of Dubai and various presidents.

Orchestral collaboration: In January 2020, they performed in concert with the South African City Orchestras at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch. They were also accompanied by the Stellenbosch City Orchestra for other “Shades of Africa in Concert” productions.

Festivals and concerts: The group is a regular presence at South African music festivals, including the FynArt Festival.
