Music style and themes

Acoustic folk-roots: Nachtrein’s music is rooted in an alternative Afrikaans folk-roots sound. In recent years, he has gravitated towards a more stripped-down and raw acoustic sound, focusing on the emotion of the music.

Nostalgia and introspection: Nostalgia is a central theme in his work, prompting listeners to engage in self-reflection and connect with universal feelings of longing and memory.

Intimate and captivating: On stage, Nachtrein is known for his engaging and comedic personality, but his performances are also praised for their intimacy, drawing the audience into his deeply personal songs

Career highlights

Early days: Nachtrein’s journey began in 2003 with “open mic” nights in London, before he returned to South Africa in 2006 to focus on his own songwriting.

Blomtrein duo: For three years, he performed and toured extensively with fellow musician Jan Blohm as the duo Blomtrein, gaining popularity for their raw vocals and guitar playing.

Solo success: After leaving the duo in 2018, Nachtrein focused on his solo career. He considers his 2019 solo album, Op plekke waar ons eens was (In places where we once were), to be his true debut, as it aligns more closely with his personal artistic vision. The album is built on themes of longing, loneliness, lost love, and melancholy.

Personal and authentic: His songwriting is deeply personal and authentic, often drawing on his own life experiences and emotions. For example, his 2025 single “Altyd Jonk” (Always Young) was inspired by watching his own children grow up, which in turn made him reflect on his own childhood. His music is often described as “word poetry with music”.
